PRESS RELAESE

PRESS RELEASE
THE SECURITY OF OUR MPs
The Progressive Journalist Union of Ghana (Pro-JUG) wishes to statethat it is high time the security authorities of this country took thenecessary measures to protect the lives of our Honourable Members ofParliament. This is in reaction to the recent attacks on MPs and otherprominent individuals in the country. Pro-JUG views these happenings as unfortunate and condemns it in itsentirety. We wish to state that while efforts are being made by thesecurity agencies to track down these criminals, the other MPs shouldtake their personal security very seriously.
In less than three weeks, two MPs have been allegedly attacked byunidentified gunmen purposely to kill them. MP for Lawra-Nandom, Dr.Benjamin Kumbuor and MP for Krowor, Abraham Odai Laryeah on separate occasions came close to death but for the timely intervention of God, they would have been dead by now. Dr. Kumbuor escaped unharmed and so was Hon. Laryeah who escaped from his attackers by the skin of the teeth.

In separate development, the host of Good Evening Ghana on Metro TV,
Mr. Charles Sam was also attacked and his green landcruiser and three
mobile phones stolen.
The public have been assured that a hunt for the attackers is underway.
We urge the Ministers of National Security, Interior and the Inspector General of Police to intensify the search for the criminals while at the same time ensuring the safety of our MPs because their functions
are so vital putting their lives at risk. The Progressive Journalist Union Ghana is an association of like minded
and progressive journalists who have come together to fight a common
purpose, which is to promote the welfare of the Ghanaian journalist and to
restore public confidence in journalism in Ghana. Our membership cuts across the entire country. ………………….. ………………. Kofi Ahovi Jeorge Wilson Kingson (Interim Gen.Sec) (Spokesperson) 0243-663650 0244-822034
