PETITION

PETITION TO PARLIAMENT

Box AT 2329 Achimota- Accra

The Dean of Parliamentary Press Corps 26th October, 2007
Parliament House
Accra

NEED TO PROMOTE EQUITY AMONG THE
PARLIAMENTARY PRESS CORPS
The Progressive Journalist Union Ghana (Pro-JUG) is an association of like minded and progressive journalists who have come together to fight a common purpose, which is to promote the welfare of the Ghanaian journalist and to restore public confidence in journalism in Ghana. Our membership cuts across the entire country. The union has noted with great concern the inequity that is practiced by the leadership of the Parliamentary Press Corps and wants to draw your attention to it for possible correction. It has to do with the selection procedure which allows only few people to be selected to benefit from programmes such as training workshops etc that are meant to equip members of the press corps with adequate knowledge and skills in the practice of the noble profession. We think that the selection process is professionally unacceptable due to its bias nature which allows for only few people especially those close to the leadership to benefit, yet all are expected to report accurately.
Pro-JUG views this action as an impediment to the free flow of freedom of expression that the national constitution entitles all to enjoy and we call on you to take actions to correct this in the best interest of the inky fraternity. Therefore we urge you to find a lasting solution to the problem.
